Election history: Urban won an open seat in 2000, succeeding Rob Simmons, who was elected to Congress that year. She won her first four terms as a Republican, then joined the Democratic majority two weeks after her re-election in 2006. In her first run as a Democrat, Urban won big.

Background: Urban's defection from the GOP ranks was not a shock. She had frequently crossed the aisle to vote with Democrats and considered running against U.S. Sen. Joseph I. Lieberman as an anti-war Republican in 2006. She is a former economics and political science professor, who has pushed "results-based accountability" in state budgeting. She also has trained horses and crusaded at the Capitol for animal rights. Urban co-sponsored nearly a dozen bills in 2009 to protect animals, ranging from hens on egg farms to elephants in circuses.

2008 Financial Disclosure: Urban is the owner of Sunnyfield Farm, an equestrian center in North Stonington. The only outside income she reported was consulting fees from the Results Leadership Group, a consulting firm that works with government and non-profit organizations.

She reported owning two stocks, Washington Trust and Avon Cosmetics.

Urban disclosed owing at least $10,000 to Washington Trust Bank.
