House Minority leader to Kennedy: Three Strikes, You're Out

Talk of President Robert A. Kennedy's resignation as the leader of the state's college system is beginning to circulate around the state Capitol.

The co-chairwoman of state's Higher Education Committee alluded to it during an interview Wednesday and the state House and Senate minority leaders called for it directly Thursday.

"I don't know how he survives," Sen. Beth Bye, D-West Hartford, the co-chair of the committee, told the Hanging Shad, a blog by a former Democratic legislative communications director. "He has shown an incredible lack of understanding of policy...The deflated morale on the campuses is horrible. It has a ripple effect."

House Minority Leader Lawrence F. Cafero, R-Norwalk, and Senate Minority Leader John P. McKinney, R-Fairfield, Thursday were more direct. Cafero said Kennedy's had his three strikes: he needs to be out. He is calling for his resignation.

"Given the developments over the last two weeks, I believe it is in the best interests of the thousands of students that rely on our state's higher education system, and those who are responsible to taxpayers for how it is administered, that President Kennedy tender his resignation," Cafero said in a statement.

Recent missteps by the Regents include offering "expedite[d]" separations of the local college presidents and unilaterally handing out double-digit raises. Kennedy also spent six weeks working remotely from Minnesota.

"I have never been one to jump to conclusions when it comes to allegations that affect someone's livelihood," Cafero added. "But I think we have ample evidence that warrants a change in the leadership of the state college system."

Kennedy "has created a crisis in leadership," he added.

Later in the day, McKinney issued a statement saying  “The Board of Regents of Higher Education needs to clean house. The actions of President Robert Kennedy and Executive Vice President Michael Meotti have embarrassed Connecticut’s higher education system and further eroded taxpayer confidence and trust in state institutions."

“Both men need to resign and the search for competent successors must begin immediately,” McKinney added.

Kennedy, whose base salary is $340,000, also faced questions this week about a new subject: His absence from the state and central office for six weeks, while he exercised contract rights for "professional development."

But he took no courses or did any academic research or writing. He said that time, spent in Minnesota where he and his wife have a home, could be described more accurately described as working remotely, not as professional development.

Cafero said the Board of Regents, and not just Kennedy, weakened their credibility by allowing this arrangement. "For six weeks, did anyone say: 'Where's Bob?'"

"The board, and I, personally, have been greatly troubled with the actions that have been taken by and the lack of information shared with the Board of Regents by President Kennedy," Board of Regents Chairman Lewis Robinson Jr. said Thursday. "As I said yesterday, the Board will be reviewing his judgment exercised in these matters, as well as his performance. Based on our findings, we will take the appropriate action."

Gov. Dannel P. Malloy issued a statement Thursday, saying the system's credibility has been shaken.

"Serious problems have been identified in recent days, and they need to be fixed. I believe the Board of Regents needs to step in, conduct a review of these matters, and take appropriate steps based on their findings. The credibility of the central office has been damaged, and it needs to be restored as quickly as possible."

Minority Leader Cafero isn’t the only one calling for the resignation of President Robert A. Kennedy. Members of the Board of Regents, legislators on both sides of the isle and the public should not be tricked into thinking that Kennedy is the only one that needs to go. If Meotti was “selected” as Executive Vice President for his knowledge and experience in Connecticut higher education, he also had responsibility for ensuring that the new president and board members were informed of what they needed to know to successfully implement the legislated reorganization of higher education. Don’t let Malloy get away with politics as usual with Kennedy taking the fall. If Kennedy has to go then so does Meotti.

If Dr. Kennedy goes then his "second" -- M.Meotti -- must surely have to go as well. If he moves into the "top spot" (as I am sure he has been planning all along) it will be a genuine disaster for all of us: a former politician and insurance company lobbyist with no direct experience as an educator, no campus experience, and no credibility with any college constituency running a major university system? How wrong that would be! Connecticut will become a national joke.

Meotti should go with him buds or not with Malloy. As a former politician, he should be well aware of the public policy and the state's finances. That he embraced the raise, said not a word and started spending the money the day he got it is a testament to his real desire - paid his nest ahead of taxpayers and he'll be just fine.

By the way, our confidence is not just shaken in the university system - it is shaken in the political world as well. It is just the latest monument to the stupidity and arrogance that has ruled this state for years and frankly I'm sick of it. From shared pain to suing Scholastic Books for taxes so we can all pay more; to stealing the gas tax money and not spending it on roads; to higher debt to paying CT companies to move around the state from town to town and calling it economic development; to the myriad of lies about the budget, its imbalance v balance; to "cutting spending" when spending is actually increasing by more than 5% in one year. It's one big cluster WTF moment and this craziness about a $340K salary; others at a quarter million dollars plus benefits while families are losing their homes, declining hours and paychecks. Hells bells - we can't even get our mutts groomed without paying more in taxes. This is the state of the state. It's beyond disgusting.

It's a good thing Malloy spent hundreds of thousands of dollars walling himself in at the mansion - any more tax hikes and spending sprees like this, the public will be storming the gates for his head.

The BOR will only slap him on the wrist. Nothing is going to change. In a few months, they will quietly give the raises back. The Board will allow those individuals that got bonuses keep them due to the fiscal hardship of paying back the money. You'll see tomorrow at the board meeting. The real scam is when they go into "Executive Session". That is where all the real decisions are made. No such thing as transparency there!

If the justification is they had more duties, the same can be said about every employee at and the BOR Office. A person working for the CCC board now has to work on projects for both the CSU and CCC system. Why shouldn't everyone be given raises for extra work.

It's the old story of the rich and powerful rewarding themselves for a job well done.

Do Kennedy and Meotti need to be let go? YES but it will never happen. Malloy suffers from the ability to admit when he is wrong. Kennedy had no business running the BOR and Meotti was only given the appointment because he is friends with Malloy.

It is time to remove Kennedy, Meotti, Weinberger and Flanagan for a national search of true leaders instead of hiring the "Friends of Malloy"

First of all, $340,000/yr. isn't what it used to be......Certainly, you know that!.......Furthermore, what with the impending increase in taxes for hard-working Americans making over $250,000/yr., coupled with high local property taxes, inflation, flagging housing values & the price of bacon; what have you got left?.......Lot's of good folks are trimming down to just one or two club memberships these days vs. 3 or more (& actually sending their kids to state universities)......Go figure.......Now, concerning that reverse Robin Hood scenario; now that's a horse of a different color worthy of accolades (from the recipients, at least)......It's enough to make one go vegan!
PS This woking man was recently solicited for contributions to a former President's Library......Does the Federal Government (i.e. us taxpayers)provide for that already?......Personally, I'd rather just support some local school's carwash fundraiser, no offense/just saying......Signed, Naive in Nutmeg.
