Election History

Meyer won 51.5 percent of the vote to unseat Republican William Aniskovich in 2004, derailing the career of a politician who had been considering a run for governor. Despite GOP vows to retake the seat, Meyer has been twice re-elected with pluralities of more than 10,000 votes. The GOP finally delivered a relatively close race in 2010, cutting his plurality to under 2,000.

Background

Meyer is a transplanted New Yorker who had a legal and political career in the Empire State, serving four years in the Assembly, 23 years on the New York State Board of Regents and decades as a lawyer whose clients included the tennis star, Jimmy Connors.

In 2004, he sought the Democratic nomination for a challenge of Bill Aniskovich, who had been one of John Rowland's last defenders in the Senate. With Tom Swan of the Connecticut Citizen Action Group as his campaign manager, Meyer ran an aggressive campaign that highlighted a job that Rowland had given Aniskovich's wife.

Depending on one's perspective, Meyer has been a free spirit or loose cannon in the Senate. During the debate over the Democratic majority's cautious approach to deficit mitigation, Meyer publicly wondered in December if the chamber needed new leadership. He failed in his bid to get the co-chair of the Judiciary Committee after Andrew McDonald resigned to join the administration of Dan Malloy.

Personal: He is married to Patty Ann Reese, a former professional tennis player and a founder of the Virginia Slims tennis circuit. His official bio notes they met at Wimbeldon, where he was representing Connors. He is the father of six. He and his wife reside in Guilford.
