Gentile was elected to an open seat by 339 votes in 2004, succeeding nine-term Democrat Vincent J. Tonucci. Her only opposition in 2008 was a petitioning candidate. In 2010, she was cross-endorsed by the Working Families Party and won 66 percent of the vote in a race against Republican Mary E. Porter.
After an 18-year career in banking, Gentile became an aide to a state senator and then the chief of staff to Ansonia's mayor.
She is co-chair of the Planning & Development Committee.
