Butler won an open seat with 63 percent of the vote in 2006, succeeding Democrat Reginald Beamon. Butler had to win a three-way race in 2010, defeating Republican Turk Edwards and independent Michael P. New Sr.
Butler was a five-term city alderman before his election to the General Assembly. He is married and the father of two. Butler was named in 2010 to co-chair a panel charged with improving how the state Commission on Human Rights and Opportunities handles cases.
Butler reported outside income in 2010 from DST Output. His wife, Jacqueline Butler, is a Waterbury school teacher. They own a home in Waterbury.They own no securities.Butler filed a confidential addendum listing any debts exceeding $10,000.
