D'Amelio won the seat in a special election in January 1996, succeeding Republican Philip A. Giordano, who resigned to become mayor of Waterbury. D'Amelio didn't have a major party opponent in 2010, defeating his unaffiliated challenger by more than 4,600 votes.
D'Amelio served on the Waterbury Board of Education and Board of Aldermen.
in 2010 D'Amelio received the top legislative rating from Jobs for Connecticut Now, a private, economic development coalition, for his support of new economic development zones, creating a state jobs task force and expediting business permits,
D'Amelio reported outside income in 2010 from his limited liability corporation, Five Capital Realty, which owns rental properties in Waterbury, and the restaurant and bar he co-owns, Paisano's. His wife, Joanne D'Amelio, owns their home in Waterbury and property in Middlebury.D'Amerlio filed a confidential addendum listing any debts exceeding $10,000.
