Election History

Hewett won an open seat in 2004, succeeding Democrat Wade A. Hyslop. He first had to win a Democratic primary, defeating the party-endorsed candidate, Lloyd H. Beachy, by 245 votes. Hewett was cross-endorsed by the Working Families Party in 2006 and 2008. Hewett ran solely with the Democratic endorsement in 2010, defeating Republican Andrew R. Lockwood by 1,317 votes.

Background

Hewett voted to abolish the death penalty in 2009, reversing a vote cast as a freshman in 2005. He is a former welder at Electric Boat who served as a city councilman and mayor before his election to the General Assembly.

Financial Disclosure

In 2010 Hewett reported no income outside his legislative salary. His wife, Patricia Hewett, is a state employee.
